New
Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) was opened in 1967. Today it is
a 628 bed teaching hospital and regional referral center. New Hanover Regional
Medical Center offers specialty medical and surgical care, which includes freestanding
rehabilitation and psychiatric hospitals and one of 10 trauma centers in the
state certified at Level II or above. More than 69,662 people visit the hospital
and approximately 3,912 births are giving each year. With its staff of 3,487
New Hanover Regional Medical Center offers the following services: four adult
intensive care units, open heart surgery, neonatal intensive care unit, accredited
teaching cancer program, surgical step down unit, and vascular operating room.
Cape
Fear Hospital opened in February 2000 as a Fear Orthopaedic Specialty Center.
The board-certified trained nurses, technicians and surgeons specialize in orthopedic
surgery. The center includes specialists in hand, foot, ankle, and spine, as
well as arthroscopic surgeries, sports medicine and joint replacement. Inpatient
and outpatient surgical services for patients with problems with their muscles,
joints, bones, ligaments, tendons and nerves are available. More than 5,081
admissions are received a year along with 26,256 ER visits. Other services include
a 24-hour Emergency Department, inpatient and outpatient surgery, Endoscopy,
respiratory therapy, rehabilitation medicine, radiology services, and laboratory
services.
