The New
Hanover County Sheriff's Office provides service to more than
140,000 people within 185 square miles. The Sheriff’s duties are to perform
and comply to the following responsibilities: courtroom security, service of civil
process, transportation of prisoners and mental patients, and service of criminal
papers. Patrolling of the county, investing crimes, apprehending criminals, and
providing custody or control for arrested defendants, both pre-trial and sentenced
are handled by the Sheriff's Department. The Sheriff’s Office operates under
the following 5 divisions: Patrol Division, Detective Divison, Vice and Narcotics
Division, Support Services Division, and Detention Division.
The Patrol Division operates twenty-four hours a day yearly. It is formed by
has four squads A, B, C, and D. A Sergeant is assigned to each quad and supervises
the shift, and five patrol deputies. The deputies are assigned to different
sections of New Hanover County's 199 square mile area. Each squad works a twelve-hour
rotating shift, with the deputies rotating to either day or night shift. The
schedule allows each squad to be off-duty every other weekend. This division
has sub divisions specializing in the following sections: K-9 Unit, SRO Unit,
Emergency Response Team, Sheriff's Alcohol Field Enforcement Unit, Crime Prevention
Unit, Training Unit, E.O.D. Unit, and Boat Patrol Unit. The Vice and Narcotics
Division is responsible for the enforcement of drug and vice statutes and the
investigation of narcotics and vice related crimes. The Detective Division conduct
follow-up investigations of crimes. Fraud cases are assigned to the White Collar
Crimes Unit, child sexual assault cases are assigned to Juvenile/Child Abuse
Unit, etc.
